ANZAC DAY IN THE HILLS

By Rajiv Chaudhri

Anzac Day, observed annually on April 25th, is a solemn occasion in Australia dedicated to honouring the sacrifices of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) who served in wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations. In the Hills District of Sydney, several commemorative events are planned for 2025 to pay tribute to these brave individuals.

Dawn Services

  • Centenary of ANZAC Reserve, Kellyville: A Dawn Service will be held at the Centenary of ANZAC Reserve on Wrights Road. Attendees are advised to arrive by 5:45 am for a 6:00 am commencement. Following the service, Castle Hill RSL will open from 9:00 am for breakfast.
  • Glenorie Memorial Cenotaph: The Glenorie community will gather for a Dawn Service at the Glenorie Memorial Cenotaph starting at 6:00 am. Additionally, an afternoon march and service are scheduled, with the march commencing at 3:15 pm. Post-service, refreshments and the traditional game of ‘Two-Up’ will be available at the Glenorie RSL Club.
  • Galston Cenotaph: A Dawn Service is set to take place at the Galston Cenotaph on Galston Road, beginning at 6:00 am.

Marches and Commemorative Services

  • Kenthurst: The Kenthurst community will host an Anzac Day Parade and Ceremony. In previous years, the march commenced at 8:00 am along Nelson Road, leading to John Benyon Rotary Park. While details for 2025 are yet to be confirmed, similar arrangements are anticipated.

Traditional Activities

  • ‘Two-Up’ Games: The game of ‘Two-Up,’ historically associated with Anzac Day, will be hosted at various venues in the Hills District. Notable locations include:
  • Castle Hill RSL: Games commence at 11:00 am.
  • Glenorie RSL: Activities typically begin at 5:00 pm.
  • Bella Vista Hotel: Hosting ‘Two-Up’ from 12:00 pm, featuring hosts Fletch and Hindy.

Additional Information

Residents are reminded that on Anzac Day, major shopping centres in the area will remain closed until 1:00 pm. However, many local cafes may operate with reduced hours, providing options for breakfast or lunch following the morning services.

For those unable to attend in-person events, there are various ways to commemorate Anzac Day at home, such as observing a minute’s silence, watching televised services, or donating to veteran support organisations.

Please note that event details are subject to change. It is advisable to check with local RSL branches or community organizations for the most up-to-date information as Anzac Day approaches.

Anzac Day in the Hills District offers a range of opportunities for the community to come together in remembrance and reflection, honouring the courage and sacrifice of our servicemen and women.
