Four challenges facing The Hills Community
By Peter Gangemi – Former Mayor of the Hills Shire
I firmly believe The Hills is one of the greatest parts of the world to live in. We have incredible natural wonders, wide open spaces, high quality developments, a high- quality workforce, a fantastic multicultural community, a high rate of volunteering and a high concentration of community groups. The future of The Hills is very bright, but there are issues we need to tackle as a community alongside our Federal, State and Local Governments.
- Delivering infrastructure upgrades
The Hills is one of the fastest growing areas of the country, but infrastructure has not been upgraded fast enough to match the population boom. The Hills desperately needs upgrades to key arterial roads as well as delivery of road and intersection upgrade projects in and around new release areas and station precincts. There is also a shortage of parks, sports fields and sporting facilities around our growing areas, with many sports increasingly having to turn away players from team sport.
2. Supporting local businesses and jobs
The Hills has one of the most talented and qualified workforces in the country, and it would greatly benefit our residents and the local economy if more of them could work right here in the shire. Our local businesses punch above their weight on the national and world stage, but business has yet to pick up during this cost-of-living crisis and they require additional support to get ahead.
3. Securing critical services
With rapid population growth, The Hills has not received the increase in services that our residents deserve. Our area requires the Rouse Hill Hospital and additional medical services, more Schools, an expanded university presence, a second Police Station, more FRNSW and Ambulance services, a new SES headquarters and more bus services and parking facilities.
4. Ensuring The Hills retains its family friendly character
The Hills is a high-quality place to live and we have a wonderful open feel with an incredible natural environment and a generous community for our residents to raise their families. As more people choose to make The Hills their home, it is important that this area not only retains its great character but builds on its strengths, ensuring development is of high quality, that our low density suburban and rural areas are retained, our environment is protected and our community groups attract a higher level of support.
