Liberal Party Preselection Battle Shapes the Future of Castle Hill

By Rajiv Chaudhri - Editor in Chief

In what has become one of the most closely watched political contests in The Hills, the Liberal Party of Australia’s preselection for Castle Hill has highlighted both the strength and the strain, within a traditionally safe blue ribbon seat.

Castle Hill has long been regarded as a Liberal stronghold. However, recent election cycles have seen the margin narrow, with the Australian Labor Party rapidly gaining ground. What was once considered an unassailable seat has become more competitive, reflecting demographic shifts, cost-of-living pressures, infrastructure concerns and changing community expectations across The Hills district.

Against this backdrop, three Liberal candidates nominated for preselection:

  • Mark Hodges, the sitting Member for Castle Hill
  • Peter Gangemi, former Mayor of The Hills Shire
  • Thomas Ryan, A relative of former NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet

The contest was not without controversy. Party factions, often described as internal “power brokers,” were active behind the scenes. Long-time observers argue that factional battles have, over time, caused collateral damage to the Liberal brand in seats like Castle Hill, contributing to voter disillusionment and tightening electoral margins.

Many in the community recall Peter Gangemi’s tenure as Mayor as one marked by strong civic leadership, financial discipline and advocacy for responsible development. His removal from the mayoralty in what critics described as a faction-driven manoeuvre left lingering questions within sections of the electorate.

In a significant outcome, Peter Gangemi secured the Liberal preselection and will now contest Castle Hill at the next state election.

The result may signal a recalibration within the party, prioritising local credibility, experience and community connection at a time when voters are scrutinising performance more closely than ever.

Hills Sydney Digital Magazine congratulates Peter Gangemi on his successful preselection. As a valued monthly contributor since our inception, we have witnessed his deep engagement with community issues and policy discussion firsthand.

With Labor narrowing the gap in recent elections, the road ahead will demand unity, discipline and strong grassroots campaigning. Castle Hill may remain a Liberal seat, but the era of complacency appears firmly over.
